Located in the Historic Mills District, the Depot once served as the Milwaukee Railroads’ Minneapolis terminal for over seventy years. The derelict structure was incorporated into an ESG designed Marriott Renaissance Hotel in 2001, and then in 2016, ESG completed a full renovation of the public spaces and 220 guest rooms. Additional scope included the interior design of 110 new guest rooms on an added top floor, and a new fitness center and pool. Demand for additional meeting space led to conversion of the ice skating rink in the historic train shed into further divisible ballroom spaces. The design takes cues from the history of train travel in Minnesota. Past and present travel is interpreted with rail car influenced details and finishes. The idea of steam locomotives, motion and travel are conveyed through barrel-vault ceilings, dream-like art installations and unique furnishings.
