Opened in 2020, The Hyatt Regency at the Oregon Convention Center filled a need that the City of Portland identified when the convention center was completed thirty years earlier – a nearby upscale hotel to help attract convention business. In collaboration with Mortenson, Hyatt Corporation, Metro and the City, ESG led the design for the new fourteen story, 440,000 sf hotel that includes 600 guestrooms, two large ballrooms, 35,000 sf of meeting rooms, a full-service restaurant, retail market and complete back-of-house support spaces. Situated within a tight urban site, the hotel navigates both grade change and a light rail line running along one side. A large porte cochere serves individual and convention group arrivals. The building massing is offset midblock to create street level and terraced spaces that enliven the hotel experience. Deemed one of the most efficient hotels in Hyatt’s portfolio, the entire project team met stringent objectives without compromising the guest experience, brand cornerstones and design aesthetic.
