Since the company’s founding over three decades ago, ESG has helped clients create environments for community, business and leisure by providing holistic, creative solutions to complex problems.

KRISTINE SIIRO

Associate
Phone: 612-524-4244
Email: kristine.siiro@esgarch.com

A fine artist and savvy strategist in the marketing department, Kristine is an integral part of ESG’s interiors and architecture teams. Her work extends far beyond the creation of branding, logos, signage and wayfinding systems to encompass all of the components of environmental graphic design, including wall graphics, text and images, and branded content. She’s concerned with all of the visual aspects of wayfinding, communicating identity and information, and creating experiences that connect people to place. Working hand-in-hand with her ESG colleagues, Kristine offers clients an integrated benefit they don’t receive with any other firm: Expert placemaking through exceptional environmental design.

The “wow” factor is a huge component of Kristine’s work, whether she’s designing for hospitality, workplace, mixed-use or multifamily housing. “We approach each project from scratch and with a fresh eye,” she says, “to differentiate the project in the marketplace by creating a location-specific, modern, clean aesthetic.” Along with a healthy sense of humor, Kristine works with her teams and clients with an eye toward visual listening: “listening to hear what their visual ideas are,” she explains.

Flexibility, creativity and expertise are key to transforming a client’s concepts and goals into the art, pattern, texture and color that result in distinctive placemaking. “My goal for each project is compelling design with a focus on brand voice and position,” she adds.

MARK BAUM, AIA, LEED®AP, BD+C

Senior Associate
Phone: 612-373-4613
Email: mark.baum@esgarch.com

Mark is unabashed in his enthusiasm for architecture, nature and the built environment, and his family. He delights in showing his four children the high-profile hotels he’s worked on, describing to them the planning and design process, and talking about the talented people he collaborated with to make the project extraordinary. An architect with an easy-going, glass-half-full approach, Mark finds the positives in every situation. His expertise also includes formulating quick solutions. “For me problem solving is an opportunity,” he says, “not a challenge.”

He joined ESG in 2014 with expertise in big-box and boutique retail, education and religious architecture, healthcare and senior housing. He thrives on deadlines, and collaborating with cities and communities, as well as other designers, consultants, engineers and contractors on behalf of his clients. Among his accomplishments are saving a client a six-figure sum in multi-project costs by suggesting a switch in building materials and methods, and implementing ground-breaking LEED design aspects into his projects. As project architect and construction manager, he recently completed Lodge Kohler in Green Bay and Embassy Suites Hilton in the historic Plymouth Building in Minneapolis—distinctly different projects that reflect how design embodies brand.

ANDREA pokorney, AIA, IIDA

Senior Associate
Phone: 612-524-4227
Email: andrea.pokorney@esgarch.com

Andrea believes that the mark of a good designer is the ability to create exemplary work regardless of budget. With tremendous flexibility, underpinned by years of expertise, she tailors her work to meet modern or traditional aesthetics, generous or restricted financing, a more leisurely or fast pace. “Every project simply depends on the client and their needs,” she says, “so I like to be limber in all of these aspects.”

Prior to joining ESG, Andrea worked in a large Kansas City firm focused on such large-scale projects as stadiums, arenas, practice facilities and collegiate work. She also worked on small local restaurant designs, where she learned her heart belongs to hospitality. “Working at ESG allows me to take the best part of sports facilities—the clubs, suites, spas and other hospitality aspects—and run with them in our multifamily residential, hotel and restaurant projects.” Moreover, as workplace and multifamily residential incorporate more cues from hospitality, Andrea enjoys collaborating with local designers and artists to create lifestyle brands with distinctive personalities.

For Andrea, work is a lifestyle as well. Her father is an engineer and builds and owns motels. “My parents have photos of me, as a child, in overalls and a hard hat at his job sites,” she says, “and I played with his drawings on a computer, thinking it was a video game. Architecture and engineering are in my DNA.” She’s also married to a construction engineer. “When I’m not at work, we’re reviewing each other’s drawings, discussing project challenges and solutions, or renovating our house, so design isn’t work for me. It’s a lifestyle.”

As an interior designer within ESG’s hospitality group, Amy utilizes her vast technical knowledge—including codes, material specifications and performance, brand standards and implementation, sustainability, and BIM software and computer-aided design—to verify every detail on a project and guide it to fruition. Inherently a collaborator, Amy believes that “connecting people, knowledge, and experiences is essential to innovating new designs in hospitality,” she says.

An expert in such hospitality brands as AC Hotel by Marriott, Amy partners with clients, engineers, and design teams to bridge communication gaps, facilitate the design process, find the best value based on client goals, and make sure every project’s key points are showcased. Previously, Amy worked in healthcare. Hospitality, she says, “allows me to bring the caretaking of guests to another level.” Hotels, restaurants, retail, gaming, and an array of hospitality amenities are all part of her purview.

Within ESG’s hospitality group, Amy says, “every property is so unique, we can bring people from a variety of backgrounds and with different expertise to collaborate and create a project that’s truly distinctive.” Amy also believes in teaching others, “which helps me stay excited about the profession of interior design,” she says. As a mentor with the University of Minnesota Mentor Connection, she shares her expertise, knowledge, and professionalism with the next generation of interior designers.

Justin was eight when he designed and built his first residential project: a pre-fab, net-zero dwelling out of prairie grasses on his grandfather’s land in Wisconsin. Today, his passion for housing that reflects its distinctive context continues, only now Justin designs mixed-use multifamily housing that adds density, liveliness and vibrancy to the urban fabric. “I love the process of sustainable and equitable city building that progresses an urban area into the future,” he says.

Justin works on multifamily residential projects from inception through detailing, in order to manifest early design intentions and client expectations in the finished product. With energy and enthusiasm, he facilitates public meetings between communities, developers and cities to build trust and investment in the process of creating beautiful housing that adds to the urban realm. He engages with other city builders and neighborhood groups on social media about healthy and sustainable development.

A member of the Real Architecture Workshop (RAW), Justin and the RAW team help students create buildings with social value, architectural meaning and a sustainable focus in a variety of natural and urban contexts around the world. Justin loves architecture, particularly urban multifamily housing, “because it’s the last generalist profession,” he says. “We get to engage with everyone on some level, from the client and developer to the residents to pedestrians, who enjoy the active mix of uses in the buildings’ street fronts. The aggregate effect of well-done mixed-use and housing projects makes great urbanism.”

Part of Sage’s process involves innovating new amenity spaces for workplace and multifamily residential projects. As workspaces and apartments become smaller, amenity spaces are growing larger in order to bring people together for coffee, conversation, game nights and relaxation, among other pursuits. Hospitality is the lens through which workplace and multifamily housing are being designed today, Sage says: “We’re always devising new mixes of amenity spaces in order to bring people together in new ways.”

Bill is the master coordinator of all information needed, communicated and implemented on hospitality projects. Whether the information comes via meetings or meeting notes, email, phone calls, texts, cut sheets, drawings or diagrams, Bill is the funnel and the conduit. “It all flows to me.” he says. “I organize the information and make sure the appropriate person receives it.” As a project progresses through its design phases, from broad-scope schematic design down to the installation of door hardware, Bill works at a finer and finer level of detail, coordinating information for the design team, clients, consultants and contractors.

Always calm and diplomatic, Bill enjoys his behind-the-scenes yet critical role. “My satisfaction comes from having all of the pieces fall neatly into place with a secure fit, so the project is successful for all parties involved.” A news hound, Bill tracks trends and innovations in hotel design and construction around the globe, so his team remains in front of client expectations and guest needs as ESG creates the ultimate hospitality experience. Add the adaptive reuse of historic properties into the mix and Bill faces exceptional challenges. But he remains undeterred. “Breathing new life into a building, giving it a new use and reintegrating it into the existing fabric of a city is especially rewarding,” he says.

His research is our gain, as he filters and applies his findings to context-sensitive, city-building projects for clients throughout the U.S.

He also mixes residential density with urban amenities in creatively designed structures to create a great neighborhood within the building itself.

As a design architect, Burt is involved with a project from master planning and conceptual design through contract documents and interior architecture. He applies his expertise to a variety of project types, including residential/mixed-use retail, corporate/commercial and custom residential interiors. He’s designed hundreds of dwelling units within historic buildings, new condominium and apartment buildings, higher-education residences and hotels.

A lively and attentive collaborator with a global perspective and many years of expertise, Burt fosters long-term relationships with clients through his innovative, singular approach to creating award-winning projects that add to urban vitality.

Melissa Young, LEED®AP

Vice President
Phone: 612-373-4614
Email: melissa.young@esgarch.com

Employee attraction and retention are critical components of successful workplace design in the 21st century. “Our clients are literally asking us, ‘What do our employees want’,” says Melissa, “because we are the industry leaders in researching and providing that information to our clients.” With her extensive experience in not only workplace design, but also hospitality and education, Melissa leads her teams and her clients in creating the new hybrid workplaces employees are actively seeking.

Variety in the types of places they can work is a top employee priority: from a formal workstation to an alcove for a private phone call; from lounge areas for working on a laptop to collaborative spaces; from kitchens with community tables to roof decks and patios. Mobility is another priority, so Melissa makes sure the necessary technology is incorporated in every work area, as well as in hospitality-style conference rooms or gathering spaces where clients are briefed, consulted or entertained. “Ours is an intentional, artful approach to workplace design,” she says, “rather than one of standardization.”

Melissa’s approach requires a genuine interest in clients’ goals and outcomes. “We implement design thinking throughout a project, from conception to completion,” she explains. This involves asking the right questions to delve into the client’s needs and vision, selecting the right tools to resolve issues, and posing creative solutions that anticipate challenges and exceed client expectations. “Trust is key,” she says, “which means enjoying a creative dialogue at every stage of the project.”

Currently Melissa is repositioning a historic building to support workplaces for 21st-century tech companies, by activating a formal lobby with a café and fireplace lounge that introduces community-building aspects to the workplace. She’s also incorporating sustainable-design strategies and well-building standards into a headquarters for a Swiss company, and folding spaces that support the healthy habits of employees into workplaces of high design. After hours, she’s a maker: sewing, painting and weaving copper wire into abstract sculptures. “It’s one thing to design, another to make something with your hands,” she says, “but both require problem solving and creativity.”

David GrahaM, FAIA, LEED AP

Founding Principal
Phone:  612-373-4623
Email:  david.graham@esgarch.com

A founding Principal of ESG, David is a national leader in the design, development and planning of mixed-use, residential and commercial buildings. David received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Minnesota and his Master of Architecture from Harvard University where he focused on urban mixed use design and city building.

David and ESG continue to lead the local and national revitalization of U.S. cities through the design of a new generation of innovative mid- and high-rise residential mixed-use buildings that add density, vitality and sustainability to urban centers.

David’s commitment to the built environment is based on an enduring set of urban-design principles: pedestrian-friendly streetscapes, creative mixed-use density, sensitivity to extant buildings and historical context, and access to public transportation. David engages interdisciplinary teams, and multiple often-competing stakeholders, to reach consensus on key issues necessary for the project’s success. His award-winning results spark further development and renewal. They also create civic pride.

David’s decades of leadership and expertise in urban design inform decision-making for each unique situation. The appropriate response may be a signature residential high-rise that benchmarks future development while invigorating the neighborhood’s traditional sense of place. Or, on former industrial sites, David has inserted mixed-used structures on urban infill lots to add value and amenities to a neighborhood in renaissance. Bridging the gaps between architecture and urban design, David has master planned areas of the Twin Cities to transform historic, culturally significant, but underused districts into vibrant urban destinations.

A networker with established ties to real-estate developers, David utilizes such connections in envisioning the contemporary livable city. A placemaker dedicated to collaborative planning processes, David balances complex, often contradictory needs to ensure urban renewal. A member of the Congress for New Urbanism, David balances his practice with education by teaching design studios and seminars and lecturing around the country.

Joshua collins, cid, LEED®AP

Senior Associate
Phone: 612-373-4665
Email: joshua.collins@esgarch.com

Josh joined ESG in 2013 with nearly a decade of experience on high-profile interior design projects, primarily in hospitality. In that time, he observed that the distinction between traditional design disciplines such as corporate, housing and hospitality were becoming blurred. He also noted that these disciplines are not isolated: They inform and are influenced by other disciplines and even such factors as fashion and art. In addition, brands such as Apple and Nike, along with media channels like HGTV, had created design-savvy consumers. “So from a designer’s perspective,” Josh says, “it’s foundational to understand the consumer, the target market, the demographics and all of their expectations, and develop concepts for developers and clients from there.”

While working on a hospitality project, Josh couples his clean, modern aesthetic with a keen understanding of the amenities, warmth and flair those interiors need to be approachable and inviting. While working on corporate projects, he utilizes his expertise in hospitality to design interiors that integrate the mobility and flexibility, private and collaborative workspaces, indoor/outdoor areas, and rooms for gathering and entertaining that employers are requesting to attract and retain employees.

“I like to step into the user’s shoes, to understand who the likely occupant will be and how they’ll experience the spaces,” he says. “I use that expertise to visualize and define the interiors I’m designing and then execute those spaces.” As ESG’s Interior Design Studio Manager, he assists with staffing on projects, mentors and supervises staff to ensure conformity with the firm’s goals and standards, and keeps tasks and projects on schedule. “ESG has all of the professional pressures any firm has,” he says, “but the people here are authentic and wonderful, and understand the benefits of good design.”

He regularly contributes to multiple projects in a day, bringing a calm demeanor to the process that helps the team to stay focused and easily manage the workflow. Lynn Beise

Senior Associate
Phone: 612-373-4683
Email: lynn.beise@esgarch.com

Lynn is often referred to as ESG’s “secret weapon.” Her ability to coolly and efficiently take on, trouble shoot, problem solve and streamline challenging projects—while producing clear and clean documents—has resulted in her elevation to a leadership position in the workplace practice group. “They’d like to clone me,” Lynn says of her colleague in ESG’s other sectors.

In her almost 20 years at ESG, Lynn has also worked in student and senior housing, hospitality, and multifamily residential. Self-motivated and an independent thinker, Lynn thoroughly coordinates all aspects of a building project. In her new leadership role, she oversees other designers in the art of crafting plans, elevations, sections and details; implementing building code and accessibility requirements; reviewing plans for compliance and coordination; and coordinating drawings with mechanical, electrical and structural consultants—when she’s not doing this critical work herself, of course.

With her singular focus, and ability to simultaneously balance all of a project’s requirements and priorities, Lynn produces a holistic vision of a project that leads to its successful construction. As a construction administrator, she communicates with contractors, reviews shop drawings, answering RFIs and prepares ASIs. She is also in an integral part of the ESG’s Revit standards committee.

This is an example page. It’s different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:

Hi there! I’m a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my website. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.)

…or something like this:

The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickeys to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community.
