ESG is an award-winning, national architecture and design firm headquartered in Minneapolis. With a focus on multifamily residential, hospitality and creative office, we create unique solutions that shape cities and elevate experiences.
Since the company’s founding over three decades ago, ESG has helped clients create environments for community, business and leisure by providing holistic, creative solutions to complex problems.
A fine artist and savvy strategist in the marketing department, Kristine is an integral part of ESG’s interiors and architecture teams. Her work extends far beyond the creation of branding, logos, signage and wayfinding systems to encompass all of the components of environmental graphic design, including wall graphics, text and images, and branded content. She’s concerned with all of the visual aspects of wayfinding, communicating identity and information, and creating experiences that connect people to place. Working hand-in-hand with her ESG colleagues, Kristine offers clients an integrated benefit they don’t receive with any other firm: Expert placemaking through exceptional environmental design.
The “wow” factor is a huge component of Kristine’s work, whether she’s designing for hospitality, workplace, mixed-use or multifamily housing. “We approach each project from scratch and with a fresh eye,” she says, “to differentiate the project in the marketplace by creating a location-specific, modern, clean aesthetic.” Along with a healthy sense of humor, Kristine works with her teams and clients with an eye toward visual listening: “listening to hear what their visual ideas are,” she explains.
Flexibility, creativity and expertise are key to transforming a client’s concepts and goals into the art, pattern, texture and color that result in distinctive placemaking. “My goal for each project is compelling design with a focus on brand voice and position,” she adds.
Mark is unabashed in his enthusiasm for architecture, nature and the built environment, and his family. He delights in showing his four children the high-profile hotels he’s worked on, describing to them the planning and design process, and talking about the talented people he collaborated with to make the project extraordinary. An architect with an easy-going, glass-half-full approach, Mark finds the positives in every situation. His expertise also includes formulating quick solutions. “For me problem solving is an opportunity,” he says, “not a challenge.”
He joined ESG in 2014 with expertise in big-box and boutique retail, education and religious architecture, healthcare and senior housing. He thrives on deadlines, and collaborating with cities and communities, as well as other designers, consultants, engineers and contractors on behalf of his clients. Among his accomplishments are saving a client a six-figure sum in multi-project costs by suggesting a switch in building materials and methods, and implementing ground-breaking LEED design aspects into his projects. As project architect and construction manager, he recently completed Lodge Kohler in Green Bay and Embassy Suites Hilton in the historic Plymouth Building in Minneapolis—distinctly different projects that reflect how design embodies brand.
Katrina is an experienced and accomplished interior designer with a diverse portfolio of work. She understands interior design shapes everyday experiences, positively impacts our health and well-being, and inspires people to forge connections with one another. Her passion for interior design stems from these beliefs, and informs her perspective when designing a project, regardless of market segment.
Her extensive portfolio of work includes a substantial amount of experience with healthcare organizations, non-profit senior living providers, real estate developers, and corporate organizations. She prides herself in creating thoughtful and beautiful spaces that exceed her clients’ expectations.
We’re raising the bar, or maybe the horizon for the future ESG office. In 2024, our new home will occupy a full floor in North Loop..
Andrea believes that the mark of a good designer is the ability to create exemplary work regardless of budget. With tremendous flexibility, underpinned by years of expertise, she tailors her work to meet modern or traditional aesthetics, generous or restricted financing, a more leisurely or fast pace. “Every project simply depends on the client and their needs,” she says, “so I like to be limber in all of these aspects.”
Prior to joining ESG, Andrea worked in a large Kansas City firm focused on such large-scale projects as stadiums, arenas, practice facilities and collegiate work. She also worked on small local restaurant designs, where she learned her heart belongs to hospitality. “Working at ESG allows me to take the best part of sports facilities—the clubs, suites, spas and other hospitality aspects—and run with them in our multifamily residential, hotel and restaurant projects.” Moreover, as workplace and multifamily residential incorporate more cues from hospitality, Andrea enjoys collaborating with local designers and artists to create lifestyle brands with distinctive personalities.
For Andrea, work is a lifestyle as well. Her father is an engineer and builds and owns motels. “My parents have photos of me, as a child, in overalls and a hard hat at his job sites,” she says, “and I played with his drawings on a computer, thinking it was a video game. Architecture and engineering are in my DNA.” She’s also married to a construction engineer. “When I’m not at work, we’re reviewing each other’s drawings, discussing project challenges and solutions, or renovating our house, so design isn’t work for me. It’s a lifestyle.”
Bringing her clients’ and colleagues’ creativity to life is Amy’s area of expertise. As an interior designer within ESG’s hospitality group, Amy utilizes her vast technical knowledge—including codes, material specifications and performance, brand standards and implementation, sustainability, and BIM software and computer-aided design—to verify every detail on a project and guide it to fruition. Inherently a collaborator, Amy believes that “connecting people, knowledge, and experiences is essential to innovating new designs in hospitality,” she says.
An expert in such hospitality brands as AC Hotel by Marriott, Amy partners with clients, engineers, and design teams to bridge communication gaps, facilitate the design process, find the best value based on client goals, and make sure every project’s key points are showcased. Previously, Amy worked in healthcare. Hospitality, she says, “allows me to bring the caretaking of guests to another level.” Hotels, restaurants, retail, gaming, and an array of hospitality amenities are all part of her purview.
Within ESG’s hospitality group, Amy says, “every property is so unique, we can bring people from a variety of backgrounds and with different expertise to collaborate and create a project that’s truly distinctive.” Amy also believes in teaching others, “which helps me stay excited about the profession of interior design,” she says. As a mentor with the University of Minnesota Mentor Connection, she shares her expertise, knowledge, and professionalism with the next generation of interior designers.
When Jim joined ESG in 2016, he brought with him more than 25 years of expertise in design/build, with a keen interest in details and constructability concerns; effective collaboration in the development of project details with construction and internal project teams; quality assurance; and building envelope analysis and detailing. His project background included multi-family housing, educational projects, resort hotels and high-rise office buildings.
He now applies his considerable expertise to the accurate and high-quality construction of multifamily residential and hospitality projects at ESG, introducing timeliness and efficiency to the firm’s fast-paced approach. As ESG continues expanding into new markets around the United States, Jim brings his expertise to these projects while “digging into materials and methods in these regions, which is fascinating.” At the same time, he consistently “brings lessons learned in the field back to the design team, which helps us be more proactive while completing the knowledge loop. Staying open to best practices creates transparency throughout the entire design and construction process.”
Jeff brings his significant expertise in the design and management of large complex medical, government, and military facilities to ESG’s mixed-used multifamily residential sector. He’s a take-charge leader who draws out the insights and incorporates the expertise of all project collaborators. Jeff diligently compiles pertinent project information so tasks are organized and completed in a timely manner. From conceptual design through construction administration, Jeff makes sure the client’s programmatic, financial, and sustainability goals are all taken into consideration.
Positive and always problem solving to reach the best and most efficient outcomes, Jeff takes a thoughtful, research-based, and collaborative approach that results in the best solutions for clients. Once an intern at ESG, Jeff circled back because of the firm’s stellar national reputation. He also enjoys the opportunity to influence the redevelopment of urban and suburban areas with outstanding mixed-used multifamily residential projects.
Justin was eight when he designed and built his first residential project: a pre-fab, net-zero dwelling out of prairie grasses on his grandfather’s land in Wisconsin. Today, his passion for housing that reflects its distinctive context continues, only now Justin designs mixed-use multifamily housing that adds density, liveliness and vibrancy to the urban fabric. “I love the process of sustainable and equitable city building that progresses an urban area into the future,” he says.
Justin works on multifamily residential projects from inception through detailing, in order to manifest early design intentions and client expectations in the finished product. With energy and enthusiasm, he facilitates public meetings between communities, developers and cities to build trust and investment in the process of creating beautiful housing that adds to the urban realm. He engages with other city builders and neighborhood groups on social media about healthy and sustainable development.
A member of the Real Architecture Workshop (RAW), Justin and the RAW team help students create buildings with social value, architectural meaning and a sustainable focus in a variety of natural and urban contexts around the world. Justin loves architecture, particularly urban multifamily housing, “because it’s the last generalist profession,” he says. “We get to engage with everyone on some level, from the client and developer to the residents to pedestrians, who enjoy the active mix of uses in the buildings’ street fronts. The aggregate effect of well-done mixed-use and housing projects makes great urbanism.”
A valued project manager for office, retail, mixed-use multifamily residential and multi-use master plan developments, Neil guides his clients’ projects from conception through completion with the highest level of efficiency, expertise and business acumen. He also delivers buildings on budget and on schedule, while addressing functionality for owners and users.
Neil continually introduces new construction types, materials and aesthetics into projects in balance with client needs and expectations. He interacts with clients at a high level, really getting to know their business in order to create a dynamic vision for their projects. From handling meetings and approvals to creating clean and clear documents, Neil helps to delivering stellar projects efficiently and effectively.
Tim brings excellent communication skills and a strong work ethic to his work, as well as a broad perspective encompassing a passion for details and a dedication to big-picture needs. He never considers challenges a problem, but rather unsolved opportunities, which he resolves with innovative solutions that enhance and ease a project’s construction.
He enjoys the fast pace of ESG’s multifamily residential and hospitality projects, as well as the firm’s collegial atmosphere, collaborative approach and design excellence. Tim’s work includes reviewing submittals, keeping team members informed about document changes, conducting on-site visits to analyze quality control, and answering contractor and owner questions. His extensive background in drafting, project management and customer relations enhance his dedication to excellence.
With a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in architecture, Bridget combines her expertise and diverse skillsets, bringing a more holistic perspective and greater value to client projects. Her varied background includes managing large campus capital planning projects, and structurally and architecturally designing single- and multi-family residential, hospitality and small commercial projects.
She has the uncanny ability to contribute to big-picture planning and front-end design as well as to small-scale details and code review, offering leadership and assistance throughout the entire process. She enjoys engaging in every phase of the project, giving her the ability to weave together her interests in architecture, structural engineering and sustainability.
As a designer at ESG, her role on multiple hospitality projects includes complex coordination of project teams and building systems, and she excels at prioritizing and problem-solving on these multifaceted, often large-scale properties. In her role on multi-family projects, she conveys her passion for sustainable urban living and responds to the needs and desires of today’s urban dwellers.
When working with Matt, you can expect that he’s done his homework. His approach begins with research and analysis, and his inspiration is rooted in the goals of his clients. By considering the way a user will experience the space, Matt approaches each design as if he were to live there himself.
Destined to become an architect from a young age, Matt has always been fascinated by the urban environment. He recalls family trips where his parents would re-route through big cities so that he could get a good view of the structures. Matt’s natural connection to these landscapes has contributed to his extensive involvement with non-profit organizations that aim to better individual living spaces.
Matt has a genuine love for architecture, a solid work ethic and desire to mentor – all things that make him a well-rounded designer and architect at ESG.
Brian has worked as an architectural designer on a variety of projects including federal government, banking, healthcare and education. Since joining ESG, he has worked on project documentation and coordination for a large number of hospitality and multifamily residential projects, supporting project managers and project architects with guiding the extended team to complete design and construction documents. In his role, he facilitates communication between the project team and consultants and is responsible for project detailing, drafting, quality assurance, and scheduling. He works to ensure that each project meets building codes, budget, and all necessary deadlines in order to fully meet client expectations.
Joel is focused on enhancing the human experience through creative design. He is a team player with the unique ability to combine strong technical skills with highly creative thinking. He takes great interest in building technologies, understanding how buildings go together and respond to their context, and the process by which a design becomes reality. He believes that buildings should relate to their surroundings and should better the community as a whole by offering a variety of uses with active, pedestrian-friendly streetscapes. On design teams, he is organized, task-oriented and efficient with architectural software, all the while thinking about the bigger picture and offering thoughtful solutions that meet the clients’ vision and respect the project budget. He is currently seeking his architectural license through the Intern Development Process (IDP), while contributing his valuable skill sets to a wide range of ESG project teams.
Laura joined ESG after working for almost 10 years at a similar-sized firm in Dallas, specializing in mixed-use, multifamily housing and corporate office. Laura uses her various experience on complex projects to create an inspiring atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration. She also uses her leadership skills to develop and grow strong client and consultant relationships. Laura has served as the Chair of the AIA Dallas Committee on the Environment and on the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) North Texas Regional Council. She takes special care to include sustainability initiatives in the projects she works on. “My intention is to always make sure functionality in architecture and engineering come together in a holistic way,” she explains, “to create long-lived projects with efficiency and durability.”
Laura’s an avid listener, energetic, and extremely organized. She loves creating working relationships with clients and consultants, to build a team that works well together. “My intention is to work with same clients over the years, so we come to know each other well, and can elevate our design goals with each new project.”
Laura graduated in 2010 with her Masters of Architecture from the University of Kansas and became a licensed architect in June 2013. In the past, she has been an active member in AIA Dallas, The Real Estate Council (TREC), and USGBC Texas. She is a graduate from the 2015 AIA Emerging Leaders Program and TREC’s 2017 Associate Leadership Council (ALC) class.
With more than 20 years of expertise in commercial and residential design, Laura embraces ESG’s multiple, fast-paced workplace projects with superior management skills, organizational experience, design, and methodology. Laura brings new concepts and ideas to the table, to keep ESG’s design sensibility fresh and portfolio of work ahead of trends. Continually refining the design and technical aspects of workplace projects, she produces creative and functional spaces for employees that exceed client expectations. The end result of her projects, she says, is that “people working in their new space are happier than they thought they could be.” In constant contact with clients and her design teams, she keeps projects on track and on budget, and design processes moving forward. As contemporary workplace design moves away from open floor plans to incorporate more areas for privacy, Laura leads her teams in investigating the meaning of collaboration today so every client’s project reflects a distinctive approach that meets their needs. Her clients laud her ability to create workspaces that mindfully reflect their corporate culture.

Because of his holistic approach to design, Sage is innately a collaborator. Working closely with his clients and the other members of his team—including architects, contractors and other interior designers—Sage aggregates various perceptions and frames of reference to create the ideal space plan (his particular passion) and aesthetic that will result in a singular workplace or multifamily residence. Part of Sage’s process involves innovating new amenity spaces for workplace and multifamily residential projects. As workspaces and apartments become smaller, amenity spaces are growing larger in order to bring people together for coffee, conversation, game nights and relaxation, among other pursuits. Hospitality is the lens through which workplace and multifamily housing are being designed today, Sage says: “We’re always devising new mixes of amenity spaces in order to bring people together in new ways.”
Since joining ESG as an intern in 2015, Julie has advanced by taking on the challenges a space poses and implementing concept into all aspects of design. “I am artistic by nature and see design everywhere I look,” she says. “Endless opportunities exist with new construction projects, but I also find that the process of repurposing existing spaces is just as inspiring.” From concept development and branding through material and finish selection, Julie collaborates with clients to find the soulful qualities that will resonate with clients, employees, customers and guests.
For Abby, “design is a lifestyle, not a job,” she says. While she actively researches new directions in design, she also gathers ideas and concepts through her daily experiences, whether lunching at a just-opened café, traveling abroad or working with a client in a state other than Minnesota. “Wherever I am, I love watching people interacting with the built environment,” she says. “Every experience provides new perspectives. Designers should never stop learning or evolving.”
She joined ESG in 2016 with expertise in a variety of project types, including corporate, civic and education. “Having cross-over experience in multiple markets helps me bring new ideas to different projects. It’s exciting to puzzle together all of a client’s needs and wants and parameters, and then watch the project come to life.”
Abby’s experience includes developing and communicating design intent to clients through space planning and 3D color rendering; preparing full finish palettes and finish boards; generating construction documents and specifications; and providing construction administration for clients. “Getting to know the client is one of my favorite parts of the process, because it helps me understand why our clients have the thoughts they do,” she says. “That way, we can address each property for a specific client and demographic. Seeing people happy with the space and creating a positive impact through design is the most rewarding part of my job.”

Roseth achieves ongoing success in his partnerships with developers by balancing their financial requirements with a creative outlook and a community-based approach to urban planning and building design. For him, every project has a story to tell, based on its history, context and vision, which helps ESG create remarkable and memorable places and spaces.

After working as a general contractor and in the trades, Ben joined ESG in 2002, bringing his field knowledge and construction experience to his new position. He oversees projects from the permit set document phase through construction completion, making sure projects are built per plans and specifications, that budgets are controlled, and the quality of the design and construction are upheld.
Ben leads by example. He works professionally, positively and proactively to find comprehensive responses to resolving issues, before they become large project challenges. One critical aspect of his approach is clear and prompt communication, “which is an excellent way to create sustaining relationships,” he says.
Beth joined ESG in 2015 after working as an architectural process manager for a national retailer and as a project manager at other architecture firms. Adroitly balancing a high volume of small projects in the retail, hospitality and workplace sectors, Beth “multitasks like crazy,” she says. “That’s how I run my whole life. The energy and creativity at ESG is a perfect fit for the way I work.”
Beth manages the financial success of a project and her client’s expectations by strategizing schedules, fees and staffing that result in a project delivered on time and on budget. “Projects focus on design, as they should,” she says. “But I look at the project from the start and analyze what’s necessary to get the job done with the greatest efficiency. I love the strategy.”
<< BackBill is the master coordinator of all information needed, communicated and implemented on hospitality projects. Whether the information comes via meetings or meeting notes, email, phone calls, texts, cut sheets, drawings or diagrams, Bill is the funnel and the conduit. “It all flows to me.” he says. “I organize the information and make sure the appropriate person receives it.” As a project progresses through its design phases, from broad-scope schematic design down to the installation of door hardware, Bill works at a finer and finer level of detail, coordinating information for the design team, clients, consultants and contractors.
Always calm and diplomatic, Bill enjoys his behind-the-scenes yet critical role. “My satisfaction comes from having all of the pieces fall neatly into place with a secure fit, so the project is successful for all parties involved.” A news hound, Bill tracks trends and innovations in hotel design and construction around the globe, so his team remains in front of client expectations and guest needs as ESG creates the ultimate hospitality experience. Add the adaptive reuse of historic properties into the mix and Bill faces exceptional challenges. But he remains undeterred. “Breathing new life into a building, giving it a new use and reintegrating it into the existing fabric of a city is especially rewarding,” he says.
With extensive experience as a designer, project architect and project manager on cultural, educational and housing projects across the globe, Bob isn’t merely interested in a building’s programming and aesthetics. He’s also keenly attuned to the practical, economic and political constraints under which buildings are designed and constructed. In this way, his creativity and aspirations for his award-winning projects are firmly grounded in reality.
Having practiced in New York City as well as in his native Minneapolis, Bob has expertise in all phases of complex urban development projects. An urbanist at heart, Bob designs so that his projects meet the street in ways that enrich the built environment. His motto: “Turning surface parking lots into buildings that become a vibrant part of a city.”
Bob’s clients find him an excellent mediator adept at reaching common ground and discovering innovative yet practical solutions that collaborators can easily agree on. He finds inspiration in helping to design more livable, sustainable cities in the 21st century.
Back in middle school, after completing an elevation assignment in a drafting class, Brian knew he wanted to become an architect. His next job? Drawing the addition for his parents’ house to secure a building permit. His clients are no longer a teacher or his dad, but Brian’s clients remain his top priority. “I approach every project and its challenges with the goal of meeting the client’s vision, goals and budget in a creative, effective and efficient manner,” Brian says.
As he leads teams of architects, contractors and consultants in the design and construction of hospitality projects, Brian balances design intent, budget, schedules and documents with constructability. Approachable and responsive, Brian creatively solves issues so that clients know they’re able to build the project they envision. He enjoys the adventure of a complex project with multiple players on the design and construction teams. “I take pride in delivering buildings within budget with efficiency and reliability,” he says.
<< BackBorn in the Netherlands, Burt returns often to Europe to study new housing initiatives and urban development trends. He’s inspired by innovative, sustainable contemporary architecture that creates communities in which people love to live and work. His research is our gain, as he filters and applies his findings to context-sensitive, city-building projects for clients throughout the U.S.
For Burt, well-designed housing equals high-quality urban spaces. He begins with the site, a foundation for city building, so that a new or renovated building’s streetscape contributes to the neighborhood’s sustainability and walkability. He also mixes residential density with urban amenities in creatively designed structures to create a great neighborhood within the building itself.
As a design architect, Burt is involved with a project from master planning and conceptual design through contract documents and interior architecture. He applies his expertise to a variety of project types, including residential/mixed-use retail, corporate/commercial and custom residential interiors. He’s designed hundreds of dwelling units within historic buildings, new condominium and apartment buildings, higher-education residences and hotels.
A lively and attentive collaborator with a global perspective and many years of expertise, Burt fosters long-term relationships with clients through his innovative, singular approach to creating award-winning projects that add to urban vitality.
Christine believes in clearly understanding the process within a project. To this end she considers every undertaking a partnership between the client and ESG. As a project manager responsible for client relations, firm workload management and direction of architectural design, Christine ensures the expertise, concerns and expectations of all are seamlessly interwoven throughout the process to ensure a fruitful collaboration. “At the end of a project,” she says, “everyone should feel great about what we’ve created together.”
Clients find Christine extremely proactive, responsible, trustworthy, direct, efficient and knowledgeable. She is highly successful in keeping projects on schedule and within budget, and excels at meeting fast-paced parallel-path project deadlines.
Her extensive portfolio includes such project typologies as corporate office space, commercial retail, hotel and hospitality, higher education, transit-oriented design and multifamily residential work. Regarding project scale, her expertise ranges from small-scale urban rebranding and planning efforts, to multilevel and multifacility office and higher education projects. Christine also works on the renovation of casinos and hotel event space, and large scale mixed-used retail and high-density multifamily housing developments.
“I’m proud to say I’m a designer and work in architecture,” Christine says. “I take pride in everything I do, from the art of documenting, detailing and creating beautiful renderings to managing teams and working with clients and neighborhood groups. Every moment within the process is fulfilling.”
As a project architect for ESG’s multifamily residences and higher-education student housing, as well as on various governmental projects, Christopher believes communication is key. “A large portion of my role is managing the expectations and intentions of designers and consultants, city officials and clients,” he says, “to be sure all of a project’s pieces fit smoothly together and the collaborators reach solutions through consensus.”
The role of a project architect encompasses the big picture and the smallest detail. Christopher guides the designer’s vision from concept through construction management. He analyzes project goals and solves challenges through technical details that add longevity, sustainability and functionality to buildings. His expertise includes applying new software and products to the resolution of traditional design challenges.
While managing projects, Christopher remains attuned to the overlap between building typologies, the sensitivity required in the adaptive reuse of historic structures, the appropriate detailing of new projects in historic neighborhoods and the flow of pedestrians in public spaces during the planning of transit-oriented development. By continually refreshing his management, technical and collaboration skills, Christopher enjoys his clients’ accolades and ongoing project success.
Employee attraction and retention are critical components of successful workplace design in the 21st century. “Our clients are literally asking us, ‘What do our employees want’,” says Melissa, “because we are the industry leaders in researching and providing that information to our clients.” With her extensive experience in not only workplace design, but also hospitality and education, Melissa leads her teams and her clients in creating the new hybrid workplaces employees are actively seeking.
Variety in the types of places they can work is a top employee priority: from a formal workstation to an alcove for a private phone call; from lounge areas for working on a laptop to collaborative spaces; from kitchens with community tables to roof decks and patios. Mobility is another priority, so Melissa makes sure the necessary technology is incorporated in every work area, as well as in hospitality-style conference rooms or gathering spaces where clients are briefed, consulted or entertained. “Ours is an intentional, artful approach to workplace design,” she says, “rather than one of standardization.”
Melissa’s approach requires a genuine interest in clients’ goals and outcomes. “We implement design thinking throughout a project, from conception to completion,” she explains. This involves asking the right questions to delve into the client’s needs and vision, selecting the right tools to resolve issues, and posing creative solutions that anticipate challenges and exceed client expectations. “Trust is key,” she says, “which means enjoying a creative dialogue at every stage of the project.”
Currently Melissa is repositioning a historic building to support workplaces for 21st-century tech companies, by activating a formal lobby with a café and fireplace lounge that introduces community-building aspects to the workplace. She’s also incorporating sustainable-design strategies and well-building standards into a headquarters for a Swiss company, and folding spaces that support the healthy habits of employees into workplaces of high design. After hours, she’s a maker: sewing, painting and weaving copper wire into abstract sculptures. “It’s one thing to design, another to make something with your hands,” she says, “but both require problem solving and creativity.”
As a project architect specializing in multifamily housing, Dave is the lynchpin whose expertise helps maintain the design intent and integrity of every project, from concept through completion. He balances the intentions of designers, clients and contractors, while realistically meeting contract, budget and regulation requirements. Raised as a do-it-yourselfer, Dave inherently takes pride in his passion for detail and expertise at problem solving. At the same time, he generates a positive experience among his collaborators as he helps them realize their project visions.
Office remodels and expansions, higher-education student housing and retail projects are also part of Dave’s portfolio. Always accounting for such primary problem areas as water infiltration, energy code and life-safety issues, he delves into the challenges inherent to every project by finding unique solutions that are buildable and maintain design intent.
Today’s multifamily and student-housing projects demand luxury detailing and amenities on a retail budget. To address this need, Dave collaborates with ESG’s superb interiors department to coordinate exterior and interior design expectations, enable consistency and fulfill aesthetic expectations. Open to new technologies in the building industry, Dave respectfully collaborates with clients and contractors on innovative methods for problem solving today’s construction challenges.
A founding Principal of ESG, David is a national leader in the design, development and planning of mixed-use, residential and commercial buildings. David received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Minnesota and his Master of Architecture from Harvard University where he focused on urban mixed use design and city building.
David and ESG continue to lead the local and national revitalization of U.S. cities through the design of a new generation of innovative mid- and high-rise residential mixed-use buildings that add density, vitality and sustainability to urban centers.
David’s commitment to the built environment is based on an enduring set of urban-design principles: pedestrian-friendly streetscapes, creative mixed-use density, sensitivity to extant buildings and historical context, and access to public transportation. David engages interdisciplinary teams, and multiple often-competing stakeholders, to reach consensus on key issues necessary for the project’s success. His award-winning results spark further development and renewal. They also create civic pride.
David’s decades of leadership and expertise in urban design inform decision-making for each unique situation. The appropriate response may be a signature residential high-rise that benchmarks future development while invigorating the neighborhood’s traditional sense of place. Or, on former industrial sites, David has inserted mixed-used structures on urban infill lots to add value and amenities to a neighborhood in renaissance. Bridging the gaps between architecture and urban design, David has master planned areas of the Twin Cities to transform historic, culturally significant, but underused districts into vibrant urban destinations.
A networker with established ties to real-estate developers, David utilizes such connections in envisioning the contemporary livable city. A placemaker dedicated to collaborative planning processes, David balances complex, often contradictory needs to ensure urban renewal. A member of the Congress for New Urbanism, David balances his practice with education by teaching design studios and seminars and lecturing around the country.
Nurturing long and productive relationships comes so naturally to Erick that he’s known for his roster of repeat clients. In fact, they specifically request him as a collaborator. The reasons are many. Erick works with his clients from Day 1, through schematic design and design development, budget and schedule management, permits, code compliance and construction. He also engages clients and contractors on a personal, as well as professional level, to balance the serious business of designing and constructing a building with a fun and personable attitude. Moreover, for Erick, every project is a high priority.
After working on financial, industrial and commercial projects, Erick settled on multifamily housing 15 years ago. Since then, he’s played a pivotal role in the new design or renovation of more than 50 properties, totaling more than 5,000 living units, across 10 states. On top of the latest construction techniques, components and mechanicals for energy efficiency, and materials for building longevity, Erick is always prepared. Yet he admits that, “I never know everything about my job, so I continue to learn something new every day, which makes this profession so exciting.”
Highly responsive to questions, needs and requests, Erick’s clients reach out to him personally for his involvement and input as a result of his expertise, knowledge, communication skills and efficient management. “It’s critical that my clients receive all of the excellent service they deserve,” Erick says.
<< BackGretchen has worked in the Twin Cities architecture community for over 16 years and in 2016, she joined ESG as Vice President. In her current role as principal, she is responsible for identifying new multi-family and mixed-use project opportunities, managing client relations and guiding projects in the pre-design phase. Her involvement with the initial stages of project development and the municipal planning process include presentations to planning commissions and city councils for project approval and working closely with neighborhood groups and community stakeholders to gain approvals. Gretchen’s client service and strong project management skills lead to successful projects that get built on time and within budget.
After 14 years at ESG managing a diverse and award-winning portfolio of restaurant, workplace and renovation projects, Heather now applies her considerable expertise to the design and construction of new hotels and commercial buildings, and complex renovation projects. Proactive in her problem solving, she takes a detailed approach to every project. Heather clearly communicates the desired scope of a project and accurately places a value on her team’s design effort, then follows through on that promise.
Heather touches every aspect of a project to ensure thoroughness and consistency. She maximizes budgets to incorporate gorgeous design details that elevate projects beyond client expectations. While efficiently managing multiple projects, Heather makes sure each client receives her utmost attention. In doing so, she nurtures profitable, long-lasting relationships with repeat clients, who specifically ask for her again and again.
As one client said, “Heather’s role in a project from concept to completion is key to our success at delivering world-class brands with memorable experiences.” Even as she works on larger and more complex projects, she’s mentoring the next generation of architects at ESG, so the firm’s work on smaller projects continues to bear her exacting imprint.
James currently manages many of ESG’s multifamily residential and hospitality projects, including hotels, condominiums and apartments for growing populations of urban dwellers in cities across the U.S. He also manages selected housing projects for students in higher education.
James’ oversight includes detecting and resolving issues before they arise; discovering processes that lead to productive solutions; and finding areas of excitement on which to focus a project team’s attention—whether through enhanced building functionality or design details. James also develops brand standards that developers use to enhance visual identity, functionality and cost effectiveness in future projects.
The breadth of James’ experience at ESG also encompasses the renovation and adaptive reuse of existing historic structures. His passion is for finding and highlighting details destined to become star attractions in an historic building’s transformation, or incorporating new details that introduce vitality to the historic structure and its surrounding urban context.
Involved in all phases of delivery from site planning through construction administration, including quality assurance and specifications, James is committed to providing every client with exemplary design, personalized service and cost-efficient project management. He matches and exceeds client expectations through thoughtful management and collaboration.
Jeff is a construction-based construction administrator, meaning his wealth of experience and depth of expertise are derived from decades of hands-on work in the field. Since beginning his career in 1979, Jeff has worked throughout Minnesota on a diverse array of projects, from small retail and large commercial to mixed-use residential and student housing for colleges and universities. His expertise encompasses all project types and construction methodologies, including wood, concrete and steel construction.
Jeff’s interpersonal skills—critical to fostering successful collaborations in the field—include diplomacy, responsiveness, listening and understanding. He honors diverse opinions, and rather than making snap decisions, he processes options and consults with other team members to resolve conflicts and implement best solutions.
He monitors follow-through on all project documents, accounts for material items for specs and design, and reviews projects for code compliancy. Jeff’s work, from groundbreaking to completion, is thoroughly integrated with ESG’s commitment to and processes for quality assurance.
Calm and approachable, Jeff is accessible 24/7 to all of his team members, including project managers and superintendents, in order to foster a productive environment where design and construction topics can be openly shared and creative solutions are implemented on a daily basis.

Josh joined ESG in 2013 with nearly a decade of experience on high-profile interior design projects, primarily in hospitality. In that time, he observed that the distinction between traditional design disciplines such as corporate, housing and hospitality were becoming blurred. He also noted that these disciplines are not isolated: They inform and are influenced by other disciplines and even such factors as fashion and art. In addition, brands such as Apple and Nike, along with media channels like HGTV, had created design-savvy consumers. “So from a designer’s perspective,” Josh says, “it’s foundational to understand the consumer, the target market, the demographics and all of their expectations, and develop concepts for developers and clients from there.”
While working on a hospitality project, Josh couples his clean, modern aesthetic with a keen understanding of the amenities, warmth and flair those interiors need to be approachable and inviting. While working on corporate projects, he utilizes his expertise in hospitality to design interiors that integrate the mobility and flexibility, private and collaborative workspaces, indoor/outdoor areas, and rooms for gathering and entertaining that employers are requesting to attract and retain employees.
“I like to step into the user’s shoes, to understand who the likely occupant will be and how they’ll experience the spaces,” he says. “I use that expertise to visualize and define the interiors I’m designing and then execute those spaces.” As ESG’s Interior Design Studio Manager, he assists with staffing on projects, mentors and supervises staff to ensure conformity with the firm’s goals and standards, and keeps tasks and projects on schedule. “ESG has all of the professional pressures any firm has,” he says, “but the people here are authentic and wonderful, and understand the benefits of good design.”
<< BackLukas has been with ESG since completing his Masters of Architecture at the University of Minnesota, and in that brief time, he has rapidly become one of the firm’s most valued architectural designers. He possesses the skill sets of a senior designer with the ability to quickly synthesize the collective design vision into physical form. He regularly contributes to multiple projects in a day, bringing a calm demeanor to the process that helps the team to stay focused and easily manage the workflow. Lukas gets involved with clients in the land-use entitlement process and often leads key presentations to various stakeholder groups. His immense talent, great attitude and strong communication skills combined with his collaborative design approach makes him an asset to any design team.
Lynn is often referred to as ESG’s “secret weapon.” Her ability to coolly and efficiently take on, trouble shoot, problem solve and streamline challenging projects—while producing clear and clean documents—has resulted in her elevation to a leadership position in the workplace practice group. “They’d like to clone me,” Lynn says of her colleague in ESG’s other sectors.
In her almost 20 years at ESG, Lynn has also worked in student and senior housing, hospitality, and multifamily residential. Self-motivated and an independent thinker, Lynn thoroughly coordinates all aspects of a building project. In her new leadership role, she oversees other designers in the art of crafting plans, elevations, sections and details; implementing building code and accessibility requirements; reviewing plans for compliance and coordination; and coordinating drawings with mechanical, electrical and structural consultants—when she’s not doing this critical work herself, of course.
With her singular focus, and ability to simultaneously balance all of a project’s requirements and priorities, Lynn produces a holistic vision of a project that leads to its successful construction. As a construction administrator, she communicates with contractors, reviews shop drawings, answering RFIs and prepares ASIs. She is also in an integral part of the ESG’s Revit standards committee.

Her goal is to create buildings and environments that inspire. Whether working on new construction, renovations or additions, Maria facilitates processes that help projects contribute to their existing context and community, and help neighborhoods take ownership in projects. Client investments are incorporated,
valued and rewarded.
Maria’s passion for architecture and design also results in projects with superb functionality and aesthetic appeal. Before pursing architecture, Matt earned degrees in biomedical engineering to learn from a scientific perspective how people experience the world in order to improve their lives through medical research. Architecture, however, allowed Matt to enjoy a more creative outlet for his talents and impact people’s daily lives in a positive way. Bringing a distinctively humanitarian approach to his work, Matt collaborates with large teams on the design and construction of hotels that leave a profound impression on visitors while providing an uplifting environment for the people who work, stay and play there.
“I keep the end user at the forefront all the time,” he says. “It’s always about how each person will interact with their world at an intimate level. We want to make sure that interaction is as seamless, enjoyable and productive as possible.” A lifelong dedication to learning and a keen interest in the impact of society, biology and physiology on the experience of architecture inform his work. Matt’s work also benefits from his prior experience on projects ranging in scale and typology from higher education, science and technology to commercial and residential.
At ESG, Matt pays acute attention to detail, isn’t afraid to ask hard questions, and is always researching and looking forward to what’s next. “My work is about creating a product for a person who will actually use it,” he says, whether hotel guest, staff or visitor. “It’s about enhancing the user experience.”

As a leader within ESG’s Workplace studio, Nate brings intellectual rigor, technical expertise and a multidisciplinary perspective to the development and execution of complex programming, design and construction challenges. His portfolio includes high-tech facilities, corporate headquarters, healthcare centers, higher-education labs and classrooms, and medical/pharmaceutical laboratories. Nate likens the challenges of such projects to “a really intense puzzle.” His role is to piece together complicated regulatory, technical and design requirements to create high performance, artful buildings.
Nate is a holistic thinker. He appreciates the challenges of integrating mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems with programmatic, technological and regulatory criteria. He also strives to meet a project’s design aesthetic so it remains appealing to both clients and users. An effective communicator, Nate distills complex research and data into accurate, accessible information for easy decision-making. As a result, Nate’s clients clearly comprehend the reasoning behind their choices, are confident in their compliance with standards, and share Nate’s enjoyment in the design process.
After working for more than 16 years on multifamily and mixed-use buildings designed for people of all economic levels and ages, Olga joined ESG in 2014. “I love the contemporary and collaborative vision ESG brings to housing projects,” she says, “as well as ESG’s creative site strategies and design of dense, vital and responsible urban environments.” In her design work, Olga applies her extensive experience and bilingual architectural skills—as well as her Beaux-Arts education in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and technical training at the University of Minnesota’s School of Architecture—to put every square inch of a project to good use and connect timeless classical principles with modern design.
While planning spaces, Olga imagines herself as one of the building’s future residents. She “walks” from the distinctive front entrance through the lobby and up into their homes. “I watch and feel them moving from room to room, preparing delicious meals in the kitchen, enjoying views out the windows, relaxing on a pool deck,” she says. “I try to experience what they’ll be experiencing, so I can design an enjoyable, healthy and functional living environment for them.”

A design partner at ESG since 1987, Pong explores the relationship between art and architecture in the design of signature residential, higher education and corporate projects. On such iconic structures as 301 Kenwood, The Edgewater and American Academy of Neurology, Pong worked with clients and collaborators from concept through completion, in order to provide a holistically designed and detailed project. “My passion is to deliver the whole package,” Pong says.
Pong’s design approach encompasses artistic expression, sensitivity to a project’s existing urban and historic contexts, and the addition of fresh materials and contemporary details that fully articulate projects. As a result, each of Pong’s projects expresses its own innovative design intent and character. At the same time, Pong is keenly attuned to ensuring clients realize a building’s functionality within their budget constraints.
A design leader, Pong collaborates with clients to maximize cultural trends while pushing those boundaries into areas of groundbreaking opportunity. As baby boomers and empty nesters move back into cities, and Millennials look for amenity-rich multiunit residences in which to live, work and play, Pong’s architecture provides them all with the confidence to choose urban living. He not only creates cultural, residential and corporate buildings of timeless design, but iconic architecture that enhances the urban fabric.

As a project architect with ESG, whose work encompasses multifamily housing, hospitality and workplaces, she thrives on the daily problem solving and decision making her role involves. She organizes vast amounts of information into clear and concise drawings and collaborates with consultants to creatively solve construction challenges, so that buildings become places where memories are made.
Transforming existing buildings into homes or workplaces for the 21st century is one of her specialties. “There’s so much history in these buildings,” she says, “which we creatively incorporate into new uses that are flexible and sustainable.” As a member of ESG’s Green Team, Rebecca is acutely aware of the need to incorporate more resiliency into the built environment. “We’re actively dispelling the notion that green buildings cost more,” she says, “as we help our clients transition to more energy-efficient projects.”
