Hoisington Koegler Group Inc. is a forward thinking strategic planning and landscape architecture firm. Their Minneapolis Warehouse District space had suited them well for over ten years and ESG was charged with executing their expansion within the Colwell Building. A vertical expansion via the insertion of a dynamic open metal stair improves functionality on multiple issues. Abundant natural light now spills through the translucent display wall and refreshes what was a claustrophobic entrance into a light-filled reception and gathering hall.
HKGI, ESG and Diversified Construction worked hand-in-hand to keep construction costs down and reuse building components. In an effort to promote a sustainable project, oversized display boards were relocated to the 2nd floor as well as storefront glazing and multiple wooden storage cabinets removed from another building. To “practice what they preach”, LEED-compliant finishes such as cradle-to-cradle carpet tile, no VOC paint, cork and linoleum were specified to strengthen HKGI’s brand as a designer firm rooted in sustainable practices. Not only do all staff have seated access to natural light, the synergy created by linking staff vertically has proven to have a positive increase in productivity and staff satisfaction.
